Overhead Stability Ball Squat
The overhead stability ball squat is an exercise that helps strengthens your core, lower body and improves your balance. To do it, follow these steps:
- Grab your stability ball with both hands, stand up straight with your feet shoulder width apart and lift the ball above your head.
- Next, bend your legs and squat down to a seated position, stopping when your legs are at a 90-degree angle, keeping your back straight and the ball raised above your head.
- Straighten your legs and return to the standing position with the ball still above your head.
- Repeat for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds. Keep alternating between 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds of rest.
Stability Ball Frog Jump
This frog jump works your entire body and is a great high-intensity cardio workout too. Here’s how to do it:
- Place the ball in between your legs. Stand with your legs a bit wider than shoulder width apart, bend your legs and lower your body down until your butt is in-line with your knees.
- In one motion, lift the ball up above your head, straighten your legs and jump.
- When you land on the ground, touch the stability ball on the ground in front of you while bending your legs and lowering your body back down to the starting position.
- Repeat for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds. Continue alternating between 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds.
Stability Ball Hamstring Curl
This hamstring curl is a fantastic flexibility and core strengthening exercise. The rolling movement increases the range of motion in your hamstrings while the weight of the stability ball strengthens your lower body. Here’s how to perform the stability ball hamstring curl:
- Lay on the ground in front of the stability ball, straighten your legs and place your heels on top of the ball. Keep your back flat and your arms laid straight by your side.
- Bend your legs and pull the ball towards your glutes with your feet. At the same time, lift your hips off the ground.
- Straighten your legs, push the ball back into the starting position and lower your hips back down onto the ground.
- Repeat steps for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds. Continue alternating between 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds.
Stability Ball Knee Tuck
This stability ball knee tuck is another great core building exercise and great for flattening your stomach. Here’s how to do it:
- Balance your shins on top of the ball and then get in a push up position by straightening out your body, placing your hands on the ground and keeping your arms straight.
- Squeeze your core muscles, bend your legs and roll the stability ball towards your chest.
- Straighten your legs and roll the stability ball back to the starting position.
- Repeat for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds. Continue alternating between 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds.
Stability Ball Plank
This version of planking is a challenging variation on this effective core exercise and perfect for sculpting your abs. Here’s how:
- Place your toes on top of the stability ball and then get in a push up position by straightening out your body, placing your hands on the ground and keeping your arms straight.
- Bend your arms and support your upper body with your forearms.
- Tighten your core muscles, keep your body straight and hold this position for as long as you can manage.
If you don't yet own a stability ball, make sure you get the right size for your height. A general height to ball size ratio is as follows:
- 5'0 - 5'4 use a 55cm sized ball
- 5'5 - 5'11 use a 65 cm ball
- 6'0 - 6'4 use a 75 cm ball
