Benefits of a workout buddy
A work out buddy can make you look forward to working out. They can add a fun aspect. You can chat and catch up during mild workouts, join a class together. Even create friendly competitions if you are both the competitive type.
Your workout partner may also see working out differently, which will add a little variety to your routine. Maybe they prefer jogging in a local wild park, or enjoy martial arts classes, while you prefer lifting weights. Switching up your routine will work different muscles and challenge you physically and mentally. You may even find a new favorite hobby.
Having someone to share those experiences with can be very rewarding, and a great way to stay motivated.

You keep each other motivated, inspired and encouraged. You also hold each other accountable to reaching the goals you set.

If you want a great workout buddy make sure you pick a good one. If your buddy isn’t as motivated in working out as you are, it can cause dips in your own motivation. When choosing a buddy keep these characteristics in mind.
1. Someone who will motivate
You want someone who is going to call you up, and make sure you get up and go work out.
2. Someone Reliable
We’ve all had flakey friends. If one of your friends bails on plans regularly, then you may want to consider someone else. It’s not that they are essential to your workout, but you may land in the pit fall of “if they aren’t working out, maybe I’ll skip today to” mindset. And that will kill your goals faster than anything else.
3. No negative Nancys
Choose an optimistic friend. It’s so much better to work out next to someone with a can-do attitude than someone who will complain about everything. This will keep your workouts high energy, and keep you going longer and stronger!
4. Someone to celebrate mini-goals with
Choose someone who will get excited when you complete you mini-goals and someone you can celebrate there’s with! Of course, find healthy ways to celebrate.
5. Someone honest, but kind
A great workout buddy will tell you what you NEED to hear, but find someone who can do it nicely. It’s great to get constructive criticism, it’s not great to be constantly criticized.
6. Don’t make it all about you
If you have a workout buddy and accountability partner, make sure you aren’t being greedy or self-centered. If your lucky enough to find someone to have fun working out with AND motivates you, then you need to be contributing your fair share too! Ask them their goals, what they want to achieve. Ask them how you can best help them. Having a frank and open discussion up front will help keep you both on the same track.
