Think outside the fitness box to make a fun workout routine
A typical thought that springs to mind when someone says "workout" is running or working out at the gym. Some people love these kinds of workouts! And then you have those who dread these kinda of workouts.
If you belong to the latter category, you don't have to run, or go to the gym to get fit. There are so many fun activities out there that you can workout all the time, without being bored. You can mountain bike, rollerblade or hit up the local park for some ultimate frisbee!
Find a Workout Buddy
Working out alone can be very rewarding. You can listen to great music and have a chance to be with your own thoughts. However, sometimes doing the same thing, over and over, gets a bit... boring. If this sounds like you, then it may be time to consider a workout buddy.
Workout buddies serve two awesome purposes. They can make working out way more fun, and help keep you accountable. Just make sure you choose a good one. Someone who will keep you motivated, without (unintentionally) slow your progress.
You can workout with someone who is already a friend (or even a close sibling) or start making new friends at your local gym or park. Just make sure to pick a good workout buddy, and not someone who may unintentionally sabotage your workout goals.

Setting mini goals can make working out fun again!
Some people can be happy exercising for the sake of exercising. For them it is not the destination, but the journey; they never care if they get to the end.
However, if you are the type of person that not only enjoys the destination, but also needs something to work toward, then set a small goal. Once you reach it, set a higher or different one. This way you are always challenging yourself to reach a higher level of fitness.
This can be as easy as losing 1 lb this week and running ½ straight by next week. It's highly motivating and fun to get to cross of these goals as you reach them.
Change up your workouts
Like the old saying “Variety is the spice of life,” so is variety to your workouts. If you do the same thing over and over, day in and day out, you will get bored with it.
Instead, switch things up. Try a new exercise. Change up the intensity. For something different try a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) routine or if you always do cardio, switch out two days per week for strength training.
You can even check out fun local classes such as
Also by doing the same thing over and over, your body gets conditioned to it and you end up not burning as many calories and you did when you first started. Doing something different kick starts your metabolism.
Turn it into a game
Speaking of HIIT workouts, did you know they have board games for fitness. Yep! Enter: HIIT the Board Game. It's designed by fitness experts, requires no extra equipment and even have video instructions. I'm kind of a nerd, but this sounds right up my alley!
If you're looking for one that kids can join in too, there's an awesome family fitness game too.
Get Outdoors
If you always exercise in a gym, try moving your workouts outdoors. Parks, walking trails, bike paths, all are good exercise playgrounds at your fingertips. Add some intensity to your workouts by trying new paths or trails on varied terrain.
Not only will it challenge your body differently, but also your mind. There is nothing as refreshing as smelling the fresh air, listening to the birds sing and soaking up the sunshine (getting your Vitamin D naturally).
You can also go a different route entirely and find new and exciting active hobbies. See if there are local rock climbing groups if you live in the mountains. Or maybe take up surfing if you're near the beach. What's cooler than getting in an awesome workout all while learning new skills.
Join an exercise challenge
Why not find a fun fitness challenge to join. Many challenges online offer periodic enrollments where you follow set guidelines to make a change in your life. They often come with a Facebook support group so you can connect with fellow challengers and motivate each other.
Join a team
Joining a team is a great way to have fun working out. You can join a typical sports time like a local soccer or softball team, or something a little more unique like a kayaking team.
It can be exciting to work together for a common goal, and having a social aspect is healthy for your overall well being.
Try a Fitcation!
A fitcation is a vacation with a fitness agenda. You get to travel, while focusing on increasing your fitness and wellness. Its a fun and great way for an extra push to get physically fit. Choose places that offer a lot of outdoor options like water sports or great hiking, so you can see the area you are traveling while working out.
Exercising doesn’t have to be boring unless you want it to be. Add in a bit of variety and you won't regret it. Keeping it fun will keep you motivated in achieving your goals!
